Stunning shapes & musical fluidity

This is a gorgeous piece by Samantha Emanuel aka The Vagabond Princess. Her poses, lines or shapes are just stunning in this one. I enjoy her blend of tribal fusion with the added contemporary elements that make her lines distinct. It also helps that she’s an incredibly trained dancer dedicated to her art form who until 2003 used to work in construction when she was bit hard by the belly dance bug and dedicated her life to becoming the amazing artist she is today. She is also able to express the music in a really fluid and connected way which just makes her performances even more captivating.

bringing a male edge to tribal fusion

I thought I’d share two tribal fusion routines performed by men. Both of them manage to showcase the fluidity of belly dance, graceful arms, well executed undulations but also add a some interesting new elements to their performance.

First up is Illan, I really enjoyed the stacatto pops, ticks and drops that he adds onto the tribal style to make it his own.

Next is Frank Farinaro. I think the second half of his routine is where he shines once he breaks out of the traditional style. His shimmy splits and multi level Turkish drop are pretty impressive.

cross training

A great video from Kami Liddle about belly dance, teaching, traveling and training. Some great advice at the end about cross training not just in other dance forms but other disciplines.

where dance can lead you

I love the Indigo and I love that they are not only inspired by a wide range of things from incredible music they discover by local and international artists to film noir but that they also push their creativity outside the dance to recreate and influence music and film. Check out this fabulous little clip that they worked on with a friend using old public domain Lugosi footage and a friend’s music.

Fusion and Formation

I am posting this video for two reasons, one I like the various elements at play here in this choreo, I would still label it tribal fusion belly dance because at the core the movements are belly dance to me, they fuse in some cabaret, modern/jazz, flamenco and perform well to a reggae song. The other element I appreciated is their formations, their entrance is unique using a moving tableau and they move in and out of varied patterns that aren’t common for a quartet.

theatrical tribal

I’m surprised I haven’t posted any Ariellah yet but here she is. I adore her theatrics, she is excellent and creating an emotive scene and holding that energy in her dance. Like Zoe she’s able to interact with the audience in a really cheeky and fun way and to pull together several seemingly variant themes into one routine. It also helps that she’s got such beautiful hands, arms and posture to contain that theatre, her training and dedication show in every performance that I’ve seen.

and some more Rachel

Obviously I’m going through a ‘Rachel’ patch and addicted to the tribal fusion vibe. I love the choice of music in this routine (Louis Armstrong’s St. James Infirmary) and how she just milks the slow and keeps the audience engaged, again presence and posture.

presence and posture

I’m featuring another video of the incomparable Rachel Brice because she melts me with her incredible posture and flow. She has such incredible presence and technique that she barely moves yet I’m utterly captivated, hope you are too.

slink, pop & turn

Zoe Jakes has nailed it with this piece. It works for me on so many levels from the basic structure of it, her simple costuming, the lighting, the music and the oooh her dancing. Elegant and tough all at the same time, quick turns, perfectly layered movements, gooey shimmies with pops on top, slinky arms, glitched out head slides.

Mardi Love a lotta slink and a little pop

Mardi exemplifies all the great qualities of a tribal fusion dancer, she has the control, grace, presence and costuming to keep nearly anyone engaged with her performance, she is also a fabulous teacher (have fun those of you in Austin who get to train with her this weekend!)
